How do you clean leather shoes at home?

Remove laces and brush off loose dirt. Wipe the upper with a soft cloth, slightly damp with water or a dedicated leather cleaner, working gently so you lift grime without saturating the leather. Clean the welt and edges where dirt collects, then let the shoes air dry at room temperature, never on a radiator.

Once dry, apply a leather conditioner in a thin, even layer and buff lightly. If you want a smarter finish on formal shoes, a matching shoe cream or polish can even out colour and add shine, but conditioning matters more than shine for keeping leather healthy.

Don't soak leather shoes or run them through a washing machine. Avoid bleach, strong household cleaners, and heavy vinegar solutions, which can strip finish and dry the leather. Vaseline and heavy oils are a common myth: they can clog leather pores and attract dirt rather than properly nourishing the material.

Deep scuffs, salt staining, and dried-out cracking won't be fixed by a quick wipe alone. If the leather is already damaged, harsher home attempts often make it worse.
