Clean 'Em Story

I used toothpaste and vinegar on my shoes. Did I ruin the leather?

    Quick answer

Toothpaste and vinegar are common home hacks but can dull leather, dry it out, or affect dye. Light damage can often be improved with proper cleaning and conditioning; deep cracking or stripped finish may not fully recover. A professional leather clean and condition is the safest next step rather than trying more DIY fixes.

I saw videos saying toothpaste whitens soles and vinegar cleans leather. I tried both on my white leather casual shoes and now the leather looks patchy and a bit dry. Have I ruined them?

    Clean 'Em

You haven't necessarily ruined them, but those hacks are risky on leather uppers. Toothpaste is abrasive, so it can dull the finish, and vinegar is acidic, which can dry leather out or affect colour if it's too strong or left on too long. Soles sometimes survive toothpaste better than the upper does.

What should I do now, more home stuff or stop?

    Clean 'Em

Stop with the hacks. The next step is a proper gentle clean and conditioning so the leather can look more even and supple again. We do that as part of the Clean 'Em deep clean: material-safe products, separate attention on upper and sole, and conditioning on leather. We'll be honest if any patchiness won't fully recover, but most pairs look noticeably better than after a bad DIY session.
